ONStor was a Silicon Valley startup that designed and manufactured a line of NAS gateway products. Started in 2000, it originally intended to create a different product, but pivoted into the storage industry and began selling storage gateways in the mid 2000s. In 2006, it added block storage to its product lineup to compliment the NAS gateway line. In 2007, it announced its last product, the excellent price/performance Cougar line of NAS storage gateways, with 4 gigabit LAN ports and 4 SAN ports in a 1U form factor.
In the summer of 2009, ONStor was purchased by LSI Corporation as part of LSI's Engenio storage division. In March 2011, LSI announced that it was selling its storage division to NetApp. The ONStor group was not included in the deal, since NetApp already had a complete line of NAS products. The ONStor group was disolved at that time, with some of the employees moving to other positions at LSI.
