In 2017, I bought this store to run it as a jobs program. We moved to a space that is triple the size of the old store, and sales went up 200%. Of course, the pandemic wasn't great for an office furniture store, so then we had to downsize and now have some debt, but we're on the upswing again! I have a lot of history, none of it in prison or addiction, but like most of us, I know people with such backgrounds, including family members, and I've learned that as much as we love to take credit for our successes, it's mostly the luck of our circumstances, our genes and the serendipity of who we met and when, that determines how we all come out. I've been very fortunate. I've been a social activist all my life and was a union organizer for 10 years. I've owned a few businesses. Let's see - a skier's travel agency that went bust in a winter of no snow, a financial company that did very well for years until it went bust in the Financial Crisis, and oh, yeah, I bought an office furniture store a few years before a pandemic shut down most of the offices in the world!
