Summary

Over the last 20+ years, Carl has been creating ceramic sculptural work, refining his craft while expanding his vision. More recently, he has been methodically pivoting from a primary focus on his Executive and Leadership advising with a creative outlet in ceramics to now with the pivot complete as a Ceramic Artist who continues to provide value to limited and select group of leadership development clients. Carl’s first adventure in art was as a young man in his early twenties working as a craftsman for the world renown artist, James Hubbell, outside of Santa Ysabel, California. He worked on various large-scale projects including helping build one of Jim’s iconic buildings on his property and the Triton restaurant in Cardiff, California. James’s influence was mostly attitudinal… how to approach art. Carl’s favorite Hubbell quote is: “Don’t look too closely.” After a long hiatus, Carl returned to art by taking ceramic classes at the Pratt Fine Arts Center, North Seattle Community College and various workshops conducted by renowned artists. Most recently, he has been influenced by the Spanish ceramic artist and a mentor, Alberto Bustos, who approaches art with the experimental attitude: “Why not? It’s possible.” Carl has a long-standing interest in creativity – indeed it was the primary focus of his doctoral thesis. His clients have long appreciated how that interest helps them find their way through seemingly ambiguous and chaotic situations and relationships. Carl brings that same vision and thought process to his ceramics with the result that each piece is unique and that his knowledge and capability are ever expanding.
