Summary
Caryn Coleman is a New York-based film programmer. Lover of horror. Short film advocate. Independent film supporter. Caryn Coleman is the founder of The Future of Film is Female, a non-profit organization that amplifies the work of all women and non-binary filmmakers through its twice-annual Short Film Fund, commitment to exhibition, and distribution. Since 2018, the FOFIF has provided funding and post-production grants to over 68 projects and has brought screening programs to cinemas across the country, such as the Museum of Modern Art with the ongoing Future of Film is Female series, inspiring and introducing audiences to new voices in independent cinema. In 2024, The FOFIF announced its foray into independent distribution with Hannah Peterson's THE GRADUATES. She was co-curator of HORROR: MESSAGING THE MONSTROUS 10-week film series at MoMA exploring the socio-political meaning of horror films since 1960. Previously, Caryn was the Director of Programming/Special Projects (2013 – 2021) at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, New York where she founded/director of the annual Nitehawk Shorts Festival and was the head of department programming. Her blog The Girl Who Knew Too Much received the 2012 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Art Writers Initiative grant, and was co-editor of the philosophy journal Incognitum Hactenus. She has organized conversations for the Art House Convergence, Athena Film Festival, Connective Conversations for the Ford Foundation at the University of Oregon, The Gotham (IFP), Nightstream, and the CAA. She received her MFA at Goldsmiths College, UK. In a former life, she was the Curator for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts’ Art & Law Residency (2011 & 2012) and owned the art gallery sixspace in Los Angeles (2002-2008) / Chicago (1998-2000).
