Summary

C. David Gammel, FASAE, CAE, is a long-time executive and consultant in the association industry. Gammel serves as the Executive Director of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Prior to AAPM he was Chief Practice Officer for Strategy and Innovation at McKinley Advisors. Before joining McKinley in November 2019, Gammel served for nine years as the Executive Director of the Entomological Society of America. During his tenure at ESA the association set membership and meeting attendance records including 40% growth in meeting attendance. The Society became a globally leading voice for the discipline and had significant impact in US and international policy issues related to entomology. Prior to ESA, Gammel worked for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Employee Relocation Council as well as his own successful consulting business. Gammel is a recognized thought leader in the association industry and has served on the board of the American Society of Association Executives and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives, the latter as an officer. As a consultant, his clients have ranged from the world’s leading nonprofit organizations to a start-up later purchased by Google to mature technology companies. He has been quoted in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Wired Magazine on such topics as social media, strategy, and the impact of the Web on business. He is also the author of the books Maximum Engagement: Moving Members, Donors, and Customers to Ever-increasing Levels of Participation, and Online and On Mission: Practical Web Strategy for Breakthrough Results. Gammel is a frequent industry speaker and has presented internationally to Fortune 500, small business, and nonprofit executives. Gammel earned an Master of Arts degree in International Communication from American University in Washington, DC, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from Miami University of Ohio. In 2002, he earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives, and in 2018 he was named an ASAE Fellow.
