Summary
As a journalist I've covered a vast range of technology and business stories, with a particular focus on media, but my interests are broad and certainly not restricted to those realms. As a manager, I've done everything required in running an editorial staff, with a lot of that time spent on startup projects. I was involved in the repositioning and relaunch of Adweek magazine, and helped shape the daily news site Newser during its beta. As a consultant I’ve advised corporate clients on the development of sponsored editorial projects. I was the founding managing editor of HotWired; later promoted to executive producer of Wired Digital, where among other things I wrote the editorial plan for Wired News, oversaw its launch, and served as its founding editor-in-chief. While at HotWired and Wired News I did everything from hiring, to editing, to developing a partnership with Reuters, to producing a Wired-branded feed for their wire service to reporting and writing many of my own stories. I subsequently joined Wired magazine as a senior writer. I've also appeared frequently on radio and television as a commentator on technology and Internet issues, including appearances on ABC's Good Morning, America; the CBS Overnight News; NPR's Marketplace; and various CNBC and MSNBC programs. Prior to joining Wired I was an editor at Michael Wolff, Incorporated (the predecessor to Wolff New Media), where I was a co-author of the original edition of Net Guide, as well as the book Where We Stand (Bantam, 1992). Specialties: Media management; web site management; magazine feature writing; daily news reporting and editing; news staff management; book publishing.
