Summary

Throughout my career I’ve been lucky enough to be confronted by problems I don’t know how to solve.   From my experience I can tell you that facing these challenges is simultaneously liberating and scary. Why? because when confronted with the unknown I get to break my rules. I am forced to challenge my thinking, unlearn what I know, pick up new skills and rewire my understanding. To me this process is the ultimate expression of freedom. It allows me to understand who I am, challenge my beliefs and renew my thinking.    However, I don’t find this process easy. To forge new ground I have to be prepared to try many things and throw away much that I hold dear.  This involves living through a lot of failure, which is uncomfortable. Failure is scary and few people (me included) like to be scared. However, I find that the successful solutions to challenging problems are almost always built on top of the lessons of failure, and the teams brave enough to embrace the unknown. I have worked with some brilliant teams at some incredibly forward thinking businesses.  I was a member of the UK Innovation team at Amazon Web Services. Before that I was Head of Applied Technology Innovation at Lloyds Banking Group, and worked for more than 6 years at bet365 ending up as head of R&D globally. For the first ten years of my career I was an entrepreneur founding two companies in the collaboration and homeland security spaces. I have successfully raised capital and exited a business via a trade sale.
