Daniel Gruen

Summary

Cognitive scientist, design researcher, and inventor with over 50 US and international patents and a proven track record driving UX innovation in high-stakes domains. My work draws from years as a research scientist and strategic designer in IBM Research, a PhD in Cognitive Science from UCSD, exploratory work funded by Apple and the NSF, and consulting and mentoring in business and academic settings.  My current focus is on healthcare and designing systems that support patients, clinicians, and caregivers with a coherent experience and view of care across channels and providers. I’ve been described as a deep listener adept at drawing out user needs and requirements. An innovative problem-solver and creator of story-based design methods, I harness the power of storytelling to capture nuances of user motivations to design effective technology solutions.  A stint designing trading support systems as a Vice President of a major Wall Street firm gave me early insights into the importance of user experience for success.
