Summary
Doyle is an actor, director, teacher, and writer. He is particularly interested in physical performance and has performed in and directed shows in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond using classical texts, new scripts, and ensemble-devised processes combining circus skills, mask, clown, and puppetry. PERFORMANCE Doyle is an AEA candidate (union eligible). Roles include Gower and Nym in HENRY V and Oswald in KING LEAR both for San Francisco Shakespeare, the Cat in Bay Area Children's Theatre's CAT IN THE HAT, and work with Make A Circus and Lunatique Fantastique, and Foolsfury. DIRECTING Credits include KING STAG for Curtain Theatre, GREAT DIVIDE and WE WON'T PAY, WE WON'T PAY for Sonoma State University, and GO DOG, GO and LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD for Bay Area Childrens Theatre. He directed movement (mask and circus) for the Crucible's ODYSSEY and Sonoma State's IMAGINARY INVALID. He has also directed scores of plays and circus performances with young performers, many of which he has scripted or devised with the performers. Doyle is an alumnus of Director's Lab West, and he received Theatre Bay Area's 2013-14 Titan award for directors. TEACHING Doyle has taught acting, theatre criticism and history, mask, puppetry, circus, movment, and theatre for educators at Arizona State, Sonoma State, Glendale Community College and Pacific Union College. He has also worked with children and adults as a teaching artist and as director at Make A Circus, Splash Circus Theatre, and currently at Fairyland. WRITING Scripts include an original translation of Gozzi's KING STAG and over twenty adaptations of folktales and legends for the youth theatre Children's Fairyland in Oakland. His dramaturgical work and criticism has been published in Youth Theatre Journal, Juggle magazine, and Pyramid. His chapter on circus technique in staging of Shakespeare was recently published in SHAKESPEARE IN PERFORMANCE from Cambridge Scholars Press.
