Summary
Geoff Varrall joined RTT in 1985 as an executive director and shareholder to develop RTT's international business as a provider of technology and business services to the wireless industry. He co-developed RTT's original series of design and facilitation workshops including 'RF Technology', 'Data Over Radio', 'Introduction to Mobile Radio', and 'Private Mobile Radio Systems and developed 'The Oxford Programme', a five day strategic technology and market programme presented annually with the Shosteck Group. Over twenty years, more than five thousand senior level delegates attended these programmes. A co-author of the Mobile Radio Servicing Handbook (Heinemann Butterworth, UK), Data Over Radio, (Quantum Publishing, Mendocino, USA and 3G Handset and Network Design (John Wiley, New York), Geoff's fourth book, Making Telecoms Work – from technical innovation to commercial success (John Wiley) was published in early 2012 , his fifth book, 5G Spectrum and Standards was published in 2015, his sixth book, 5G and Satellite Spectrum, Standards and Scale was published in 2018 and his most recent book, 5G and Satellite RF and Optical Integration came out at the beginning of 2023. Geoff is a Faculty Member of the Continuing Education Institute based in Sweden and presents a 5 Day workshop on the regulatory issues, competition policy issues and sovereign security challenges of high count LEO and VLEO constellations. These workshops include an update on next generation photonic and optical space and space to ground networks. As a past Director of Cambridge Wireless, Geoff is actively involved in a number of wireless heritage initiatives that aim to capture and record past technology and engineering experience. He is a past patron of the Science Museum and keen supporter of the Museums' curatorial and archival work on wireless and communication system devices. In his spare time, Geoff plays Jazz trumpet and cornet semi-professionally, he is a keen marathon and ultra-runner and the slightly guilty owner of a 2018 Caterham Super Sprint which is unfortunately ridiculous fun to drive - Geoff has planted 4 trees in his garden on the basis that it makes this particular project carbon neutral.
