Summary
Howard I. Finberg is the former director of training partnerships and alliances at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, FL. He retired from the Institute in December 2014 and in January 2015 was named a Poynter Affiliate. Finberg guided NewsU, the world's largest e-learning site for journalism training to more than 250,000 registered users. http://www.newsu.org. He joined Poynter in 2002 as the Institute’s Presidential Scholar. Finberg also works with training centers and universities, to explore e-learning opportunities. He is the co-founder of the Digital Futurist Consultancy, which specialized in helping the media industry and emerging companies with content and revenue strategies and publishing technologies. Clients included the Newspaper Association of America, McClatchy Co. and MediaNews. Before founding the Digital Futurist, he was a corporate vice president at Central Newspapers, prior to its sale to Gannett. At CNI he managed the CNI's Internet and technology investments and provided strategic and operational guidance for print and online efforts. He was a director at Phoenix Newspapers, Inc., which publishes The Arizona Republic. At The Republic, he led the creation and launch of the award-winning online service, Arizona Central [www.azcentral.com] on the Web and on AOL in early 1995. He also held senior management positions at The Republic and at the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune and worked at the San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Examiner and The New York Times. He established the Chicago Tribune’s graphics desk, the first in the country. Finberg was honored as the NAA "New Media Pioneer" in 2000. In 2009 he was named SF State's University's Distinguished Journalism Alumnus.
