Julie Petersen is a freelance writer/editor and communications strategist who brings nearly 20 years of effective reporting, writing and publishing experience to public education and innovation. A former business journalist, Julie is now focused on helping organizations convey clear and compelling information about education innovation to a wide range of audiences, including entrepreneurs, grantmakers, investors, policymakers, educators, and families. As communications director at NewSchools Venture Fund, she led the development of a wide range of marketing materials and publications designed to illuminate the work of education innovators. Topics she has studied and written about include: defining education entrepreneurship; the capital market for education innovation; aligning the supply of and demand for innovative educational products and services; the engagement of the private, philanthropic, and nonprofit sectors in reform; charter school scale and facilities; data-driven instruction and management; and the link between K-12 and college completion. Based in Petaluma, California, Julie has been an independent consultant since 2011. She has also served as a community board member for River Montessori Charter School, secretary of the River Montessori Foundation, and is a member of the WORK Petaluma co-working space.
