Summary
I started the world's first Open Source company, Cygnus Support, in 1989. Cygnus was the first open source company to turn a profit (1990), receive VC funding (1997), and was acquired by Red Hat for $687M (2000). Red Hat was acquired by IBM in 2019 for $34B in 2019. Here are my thoughts on the economics of open source: https://opensource.com/article/18/9/awesome-economics-open-source I became the CTO of Red Hat in January 2000. As VP of Open Source Affairs for Red Hat, I promote open source technology strategy and policy to the private and public sectors, globally. Since 2020 I have also been acting as Project Lead for OS-Climate, a Linux Foundation project. Specialties: Software architecture, design, and implementation, Open Source licensing, technologies, and policy, Customer support and satisfaction, Entrepreneurship, Corporate Strategy, Design Thinking. I have broad, cross-cutting interests that all relate somehow into a larger whole: sustainable agriculture and food-based community systems, education ranging from K-12 to college and graduate level, the arts and the artistic process, world history and travel, music- and movie-making, martial arts, and fitness.
