Summary
MY POSTS herein were, for over 12 years, a curated journal club in the natural sciences. Now I only post visuals periodically while focusing my efforts on sculpture and a curated collection of science briefs. These were excerpts from the best and brightest, made into palatable format, in their own words. I just joined the dots. I tried to find interesting topics or papers and cut them into bite sized pieces. As an experiment, I pushed the limits of content difficulty, and found that even non-science trained people maintained interest. The structure of my posts was five or six per day, followed by an “oddball” that is often unrelated, then followed by a surreal picture, a picture from space, and a picture from nature, all aimed to cultivate awe and wonder. Then at weekends I posted FRAGMENT FROM NATURE which is on a theme unrelated to the weekday string. MY TRANSITION TO SCULPTURE. Reinventing yourself is a privilege of some people. During a trip to Prague a few years ago to celebrate Kepler’s birthday, and to stand on the Charles bridge and catch a six sided snowflake, I had an unexpected revelation: I wanted to become a sculptor. It had never ever occurred to me before. But after visiting a concentration camp and seeing a sculpture of a human female with a horses’s head stooping over her own entrails, my life changed. From that day on I taught myself sculpture. The history of sculpture illustrates that the human form has been more than done. I decided that my niche was ‘Nature Writ Large’. After experimenting with carious media I came to realize that stone was where I belonged, in the Gothic manual tradition. For more information, email nigel.fleming@cantab.net
