Summary
I am an engineer and entrepreneur, having worked on a number of projects related to virtual worlds, online communication, and collaboration. I have a lab in San Francisco where I am working on new ideas that can use tech to help people, with a focus on re-building trust and connection with others. I don't do angel investing, but I do enjoy mentoring others, as well as serving on boards. The thing I am best known for is founding and creating the virtual world of Second Life. At the start of my career, in 1995, I created a videoconferencing app called FreeVue which I sold to RealNetworks where I became CTO. After Second Life I co-founded several companies, including LoveMachine, Coffee & Power, and High Fidelity. I am an optimist who believes that people are mostly good, tech is a tool not a religion, and life is found in the balance not at the extremes.
