Summary
At Echelon I led the creation of the LonWorks(R) technology platform from Echelon's inception through June 2014. Notable technology milestones: 1. With Engineering, led the creation of the first open, distributed communications and control system that was generic, rather than specific to a single industry. 2. Created an interoperability model for LonWorks based devices with Echelon's customer input resulting in the first and most successful, cross industry interoperability framework by numbers of certified devices. 3. With engineering, developed the world's first power line communications system that was reliable enough for mass deployment. This led to the world's first nation-wide smart grid deployment of over 27 million residential meters using Echelon's power line transceivers in Italy with the Italian utility ENEL. 4. The architect for Echelon's Networked Energy System (NES) -- a system that generalized the concepts within the ENEL system for sale to other utilities resulting in many successful deployments with European utilities. 5. The architect for Echelon's move into the Internet of Things. With a consultant, created a proof of concept showing that the upper layers of the Echelon control system architecture could run over any UDP socket thus preserving our application framework while allowing the use of and integration with other link technologies such as 6LoWPAN, WiFi, and Ethernet along with Echelon's Power Line and Free Topology Twisted Pair transceivers. An additional benefit was that this architecture seamlessly interoperated with all of Echelon's previous products, thus protecting the investment of Echelon's customers. This idea was productized and Echelon formed a division focused on promoting the solution for the Industrial Internet of Things.
