Summary
Ruben de Freitas Cabral was educated in Portugal, Germany and the United States, having been awarded a Doctorate of Education by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. During his 21 years in the United States Professor Cabral established his professional and civic credentials through his work as an educational administrator, civic leader and community developer. In 1991 Professor Cabral returned to Portugal, at the behest of the Luso-International Foundation, to establish international private schools that could best meet the needs of an increasingly complex and globalized world. Four such schools were created in Portugal. From 1992 onwards, Professor Cabral was also a faculty member of the Catholic University of Portugal, having coordinated for many years the Master’s degree in Educational Administration. He also lectured at the João de Deus School of Education and at the Open University. In 2003 Professor Cabral was appointed Rector (President) of the University of Saint Joseph, Macau, China, where he served until 2012. During his mandate, the Inter-University Institute became the University of Saint Joseph, offering Licentiates, Master's, and doctorates to students from 68 different countries, a new campus designed and started to be constructed, and one of the first paperless universities in the world. In 2018, Professor Cabral went to southern Nigeria to help develop the University of Africa at Toru-Orua, was appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, and was instrumental in establishing a Teaching Center of the University of London at the university. He served there until 2018 when he returned to Portugal and resumed his service at the Graduate School of Education João de Deus. Professor Cabral was an often-invited speaker who published numerous articles and authored several publications, especially O Novo Voo de Ícaro. Discursos em educação (Icaro’s new flight. Discourses on Education). Professor Cabral was awarded the Medal for Valor and Merit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Portugal, in 1987, made a Commander (Comendador) of the Order of Merit by the President of the Portuguese Republic in 1990, and in 2021 the military medal - Amigos da Marinha - by the Brazilian Navy.
