Summary
I am fully retired from a 45 year business and consulting career. When I think back on all those years it is the people - not just the proverbial ‘people’, but the heros and the fools, the saints and the rats, the winners and the also-rans who give it valence. By way of context, a quick recap… The first half of my career had me engaged in General Management of small manufacturing businesses – high ticket consumer goods –most of them family-owned and operated. As a liberal arts Mechanical Engineer by training with MIT Sloan underpinnings, I have never strayed very far from technology and new ventures. The mix includes submarines, steam engines, weather instruments, silverware, eyeglass frames, and a bunch of one-off ideas in retirement. The last decades of my career were devoted to executive coaching, first as an executive outplacement counselor in a top caliber, boutique firm. Subsequently I ran a ‘peer advisory group’ for fellow CEO’s of small businesses under the auspices of TEC (now ‘Vistage’) helping group members realize their goals and aspirations, professionally and personally. In 1994 I pioneered MIT Sloan’s Alumni Career Services and continued to build it as the market for professionals evolved. With all the connectivity that technology brings – LinkedIn and OpenAI solidly among them – there is still a need for the fundamentals. Career related Best Practices grow out of traditional values and, though the medium may change, the message carries on. Now it's time for me to 'carry on'. Take courage. Specialties: Transition, notably career transition, job search, objective setting , targeted networking, leadership, accountability, compensation negotiation, exit strategies, recruiting, hiring, firing. And, recently, retiring. OpenAI brings a burst of creative energy that maybe only a retiree can appreciate. But, hey. Why not?
