Summary
How did 30+ years in software lead me to fight for social justice in Puerto Rico? Yeah, I wonder about that one too, but here we are! That tale is long and I’d love to share all of it with you, but I’ve only got 2,600 characters, so let’s do this. After all the technologies, the systems, and so many different programming languages I’ve learned that: - The best technology solutions are created when everything is FREE and OPEN. That’s why for more than 20 years I have been an activist for free and open source software. Activism is in my nature and I think that it is important to stand up for the things you believe in. That’s why I’m taking a new stand: Puerto Rico should use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to become self-sustaining, decolonized, and united behind the protection of its natural resources, and the oceans that surround us. - John Gall said: “A complex system designed from scratch NEVER works & CANNOT be patched up to make it work. You have to start over, beginning with a working SIMPLE system." We have to stop building systems that we don’t want! This means that we must start using systems thinking to prevent us from repeating past unsuccessful patterns. #UTheory - The time to make things happen is right now! The impacts of climate change will continue increasing in Puerto Rico. The time to prepare is now. Individually and holistically, I believe the UN sustainable development goals are the only way to organize ourselves to respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow.
