Rajan was educated St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, the University of Oxford, where he received his doctoral degree; and UC Berkeley, Cornell University and the Max Planck Institute für Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin, where he received post-doctoral training. Rajan has served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Pesticide Action Network, North America, and on the Board of National Radio Project, producers of the news program, Making Contact.
