Former Professor at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley, where I led development of the Software Management MS program, and taught courses on product and people management, and open source. My research focus was on evaluation and adoption of open source software. Previously spent 20 years as a senior software executive, including founder and CEO of Interactive Development Environments (developer of the Software through Pictures multiuser modeling and low-code environment), as well as senior management for two SaaS startups. IDE was one of the first 100 dotcoms and among the first to include open source code in a commercial product. Ran a product development lab for Bluestone Software (acquired by HP) that built an award-winning toolkit for mobile access to Java Enterprise web applications. Served as VP of engineering for a dot-com startup and VP of product development for another startup. Strong track record of conceiving and building innovative software products and systems. Long term interest in global issues related to technology, policy, and economic development. Have given talks in 25 countries, and visited more than 75. Awarded ACM Fellow and IEEE Life Fellow status for work on software engineering environments, IFIP Fellow and ISPMA Fellow status for career achievements. Active member of the software engineering research community, with more than 100 conference and journal publications, plus 13 edited books. Frequent invited speaker at conferences, with extensive conference service, including General Chair, Program Chair, and Program Committee member. Member, Int'l.
